Sage & Silver: A Sculptural Leaf Ring
Create a beautiful sage leaf ring from metal clay in this 2-day workshop.
About this workshop
NOTE: This class has flexible scheduling and can accommodate up to 5 students. Please use the "request to book" button to arrange a mutually agreeable class time. Let the quiet details of the natural world guide your work in this focused, two-day metal clay workshop. In Sage & Silver, you’ll create a sculptural ring inspired by real sage leaves grown in my own herb garden. Using silicone molds taken directly from those leaves, you’ll form a ring that wraps organically around the finger, complete with fine vein detail and gentle movement. The finished ring looks like a real leaf, yet remains comfortable enough for everyday wear. This is an intermediate-level class designed for students ready to level up their metal clay skills. You’ll learn how to create and use a paper template, accurately measure ring size while accounting for shrinkage, refine your work at the greenware stage, and add texture and detail that will survive firing. A key focus of this class is gemstone setting. You’ll learn my approach to tube setting in silver metal clay, a technique that differs from many traditional methods and gives you more control and confidence. Gemstones are provided, and you may choose to include up to three as a subtle accent or keep your ring purely botanical. On the first day, you’ll build and refine your ring before it is kiln-fired overnight. On the second day, you’ll focus on finishing, patination, and polishing, bringing out the depth of the leaf texture and giving your ring a beautiful, wearable finish. Throughout the class, you’ll have guidance at every step, especially through the tricky moments of sizing and shrinkage. All materials and use of the studio’s tools are included. You’re welcome to bring your own tools if you prefer. This is a 10-hour workshop spread over two days. • Day One - class begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. with an hour for lunch. Bring your own or travel a few minutes into Ashland for dining options. • Day Two - class begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. This is an intermediate-level class. Previous metal clay experience is recommended.
