Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to create your project is included — use of studio tools, all materials needed to make the project, and the piece you make in class. If you have your own tools and prefer to use them, you're welcome to bring them along.
Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Closed-toe shoes are required — no sandals or open-toe footwear in the studio. Avoid loose, flammable clothing, dangling sleeves, scarves, and unrestrained long hair. Aprons are provided. Since jewelry work tends to be small and detailed, you may want to bring a magnifying visor or reading glasses if you use them.
Classes are intentionally small — between 2 and 6 students — so everyone gets personalized attention and plenty of time at the bench. One-on-one sessions are also available if you prefer a private experience.
It depends on the workshop. Each listing includes recommended prior experience so you can find the right fit for your skill level. When in doubt, reach out and I'll point you in the right direction.
Workshop length varies depending on the complexity of the project. Each class is designed to give you plenty of time to complete your piece without feeling rushed — no one leaves with an unfinished project and a mild sense of panic. Check the individual workshop listing for specific timing.
The studio has ample on-site parking. Please note that reaching the studio requires climbing approximately 14 stairs. If mobility is a concern, please contact me before booking so we can discuss options.
Yes! Private workshops are available for individuals or groups, and I can create a custom workshop tailored to your interests or skill level. Contact me to discuss what you have in mind.
Absolutely. Gift cards are available for both jewelry purchases and workshops. A great gift for the creative person in your life who has everything.
Each workshop has its own booking page — just click "Request to Book" on the workshop you want and follow the prompts. Easy as that.
Workshops have limited spots, so please make sure the date and content work for you before booking. Refunds are not available if you simply can't attend. However, you may transfer your spot to someone else — just let us know promptly with the new attendee's name and email.
Refunds are issued in the following situations: AJ Newell Studio reschedules and you can't make the new date; instructor illness or emergency; severe weather or natural disaster; facility issues such as a power outage; health or safety concerns; or government restrictions. A $25 administrative fee will be deducted from all refunds, and documentation of the cancellation reason is required.
If you need to cancel or are running late, please call (804) 467-2550 as soon as possible.
Yes. All workshop participants are required to sign a liability waiver before participating. Our workshops involve hands-on work with hot tools, kilns, torches, chemicals, and hand tools — all standard in a professional craft studio. The waiver will be provided electronically prior to your session. Participants must be 18 or older, or accompanied by a parent or guardian who signs on their behalf.
Yes, and we take them seriously. Protective goggles and masks are required for certain activities and will be provided or specified in advance. Participants who arrive impaired or otherwise unfit for safe participation will not be permitted to attend and no refund will be issued. We reserve the right to exclude anyone posing a risk to themselves or others. Safety first — always.
Due to the handmade nature of each piece, ring sizes and chain lengths are final and cannot be altered after purchase. Sizing details are listed in each product description. To find your ring size, any jewelry store can size you for free.
Your piece is a work of art — treat it like one. Put your jewelry on last when getting dressed and take it off first when you're done. Apply perfume, lotion, and hairspray before putting on your jewelry. Remove pieces before showering, swimming, sleeping, exercising, or doing household chores. Store each piece separately in individual bags. Clean with a soft cloth only — avoid chemical cleaners and ultrasonic devices, which can damage gemstones and remove the intentional patina on many pieces.
Yes, for pieces made by AJ Newell Studio. Repair fees vary depending on the work needed. Contact me to describe what needs attention and we'll go from there. I reserve the right to decline unreasonable repair requests and do not repair jewelry made by other artists.
