About this workshop

There's something deeply satisfying about watching a delicate image survive the heat of the kiln and come out crisp, clear, and exactly where you put it. In Images in Fire, you'll learn how to use enamel decals to add detailed imagery to your jewelry. This four-hour enamel decal workshop at my studio in Ashland, Virginia, a short drive north of Richmond, works with water-slide decals: they're applied to an enameled surface, then fired so the image becomes permanently fused into the glass. The result often surprises people. What goes in really does come out looking just as intended. This is a project-based class focused on jewelry. You'll create a coordinating enameled pendant and pair of earrings while learning how to apply decals smoothly and confidently. You'll explore kiln firing, with the option to try torch firing if you're curious, and learn how to enhance black-line decals with subtle hand coloring when it complements the design. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN: • How to prepare enameled metal surfaces for successful decal application • How to apply water-slide decals using warm water and gentle repositioning • How to fire decals in a kiln, with optional torch-firing exploration • How to preserve crisp detail and avoid common decal mishaps • How to add transparent enamel layers or hand color for depth and durability • How to finish your jewelry for a clean, professional result WHO THIS CLASS IS FOR: Jewelry makers who want imagery, illustration, or fine detail in their enamel work, not just color. It's beginner-friendly, approachable, and designed so you can relax and enjoy the process without overthinking it. All skill levels welcome, and no prior enameling experience is required. WHAT'S INCLUDED: All enamels, decals, copper, and use of studio tools, kiln, and torches. You may wish to bring magnifying glasses if you like a close look at your work. SCHEDULING: This class has flexible scheduling and accommodates up to 5 students. Use the "Request to Book" button to arrange a mutually agreeable class time.
