Fire & Color: Introduction to Enameling
Discover the ancient art of fusing glass to metal.
About this workshop
NOTE: This class has flexible scheduling and can accommodate up to 5 students. Please use the "request to book" button to arrange a mutually agreeable class time. Enameling is a little bit science, a little bit magic. Powdered glass is applied to metal, fired in a kiln, and transformed into luminous, colorful surfaces. If you’ve ever been curious about how it works, this class is a friendly, low-pressure place to begin. In this four-hour, techniques-based workshop, you’ll learn the foundations of enameling while creating jewelry you’ll be excited to wear and share. We’ll start by preparing pre-cut copper shapes, then explore both transparent and opaque enamels through a mix of guided prompts and open experimentation. Along the way, you’ll try dry sifting, wet-packing, stenciling, simple line work, color layering, and multiple firing methods. This is very much a play and learn as you go class. You’ll get plenty of encouragement, gentle guidance, and reassurance that you’ve got this. By the end of class, students leave with a pair of earrings and a pendant, finished and ready to show off. This class is ideal for absolute beginners, curious jewelry makers, and groups looking for a creative experience to share together. No prior enameling experience is required. All materials and use of studio tools are included. You may wish to bring magnifying glasses.
